Katrin Pütz from the University of Hohenheim was shortlisted with her entry Biogas Backpack to the ”empowering people. Award“ of the Siemens Stiftung.   [01.10.13]

The international competition aimed to identify the most promising technological solutions and products suitable to solving problems of basic supply in developing countries. The top three winners will be announced at the Award Ceremony on October 30th, 2013 in Nairobi and will receive a total prize money of 100,000 EUR.

Biogas is an affordable source of energy for rural areas in many parts of the world. However, the distribution of this promising and needed technology is still very difficult.

In order to make biogas accessible for more people and more sustainable in its use, an alternative biogas dissemination concept is needed. Katrin Pütz from the Unversity of Hohenheim developed a mobile biogas storage container, as a low-tech storage device to be carried as backpack between biogas plant and household. It is a pillow shaped balloon from flexible, gas tight material, plastic sheet and fabric. It is easily inflated at the biogas plant by connecting it to the digester, then the backpack is carried to the house were the biogas bag is either used for cooking or lighting. The bag is connected via hoses to a biogas stove or biogas lamps.

Among the 23 shortlisted submissions for the “empowering people. Award”. you can vote for your own favorite – and make him the winner of the “Community Prize”! Choose Biogas Backpack
