Description: The „Excursion to the Tropics and Subtropics“ provides students with a guided on-site experience in tropical countries to complement theoretical knowledge obtained during lectures with field experiences.

The Mekong Delta in Vietnam is one of the most important food production areas for South-East Asia. During the last decades, this agro-ecosystem was subjected to strong environmental as well as economic changes. Sea level rise and salt intrusion as a result of climate change are threatening rice production systems. Global market dynamics have triggered a tremendous expansion of aquaculture with consequences for Vietnam’s entire food market and the environment. The excursion will be a great opportunity for all participants to share experiences, knowledge, and ideas in the context of land use systems under global change.

In cooperation with Kien Giang University, we will demonstrate and discuss issues related to tropical agro-ecosystems, geo-sciences, animal production systems incl. aquaculture, socio-economical dynamics and value chains, rural development, and natural resource management across the Mekong Delta in Vietnam.

It is compulsory that all participating students join the module 4907-490 “Excursion to the Tropics and Subtropics” during the winter semester 2019/2020.
