The 'Excursion to the Tropics and Subtropics' offers MSc students a guided, on-site experience in tropical regions, combining theoretical knowledge with practical field observations. Together with the participants, the interdisciplinary team of experts will reflect on tropical agro-ecosystems from the perspectives of geosciences, ecology, plant and animal farming systems, as well as the socio-economic dynamics, value chains, rural development, and natural resource management.
India, the most populous country in the world, is one of the most important food systems and economic markets in Asia. However, its agricultural production systems face significant environmental, social, and economic challenges that threaten food security and the sustainable use of resources. In cooperation with the Research Institute of Organic Agriculture (FiBL, Switzerland), we will examine and discuss selected production systems (e.g. cotton production in Kasrawad, Madhya Pradesh) and their associated value chains. Participants will gain hands-on experience in field data collection methods and discuss the challenges faced by smallholder farmers and other stakeholders in the food system.
All students applying to participate are required to join module 4907-490, 'Excursion to the Tropics and Subtropics', during the summer semester of 2026.
