The “Große Tropenexkursion” provides the students a guided on-site experience in two developing countries in Sub-Saharan Africa and offers the opportunity to complement theoretical knowledge obtained during lectures with experiences in the field. The excursion aims to demonstrate and discuss at the example of Ghana and Southern Burkina Faso issues related to tropical agro-ecosystems, tropical agriculture/horticulture, processing and marketing of tropical crops, rural develop-ment, natural resource management as well as research and teaching. The student group will be accompanied by four supervisors from Hohenheim and by partners of different institutions of Ghana and Burkina Faso.

The group will visit agricultural/horticultural production and processing units, research and training institutes as well as natural sites along a South-North gradient from the coastal region of Ghana to the Sahelian zone in Burkina Faso. The interdisciplinary exchange will provide profound insights into the complexity of rural development issues.

It is compulsory that all participating students join the module 3803-490 “Excursion to the Tropics and Subtropics” during summer semester 2014.
